On 12/Nov/04 there was an explosion and
fire on board charter motor yacht ZENIA (LOA 23,4m, Greek Flag)
while she was moored at the quay of Zea Marina. ZENIA is a Canados
75 with wooden hull, built during the 1980s. Moored next to ZENIA
was motor yacht EL MAYA (St. Vincent Flag), speedboat LEON (UK
Flag) and motor yacht SAHAB II (Panama Flag). The fire spread
to LEON and EL MAYA. The crew of SAHAB II reacted quickly and
moved their vessel out of danger, sustaining only small damages.
ZENIA was a total loss, she is sunken with only her bow above
water shown in the above photograph surrounded by a red antipollution
boom.
EL MAYA was towed out of the marina still
on fire. She grounded on Botsalaki beach which was next to the entrance
of the marina. The fire was extinguished but her superstructure
and part of her hull sustained serious damages. LEON sustained serious
damages and sunk. 2 crewmembers of ZENIA were injured and were taken
to Eleusis hospital for medical assistance.
A dissapointing photo from the other side
of the marina showing the bow of ZENIA, floating fragments and the
fire brigade in attendance.
Another view, ZENIA has floated in front
of a sailboat, an Antipollution craft and Coast Guard boat are in
the area. You can see the bow is burnt on the Port side only. (Click

A photo from two days before. I assume
LEON is the speedboat and then ZENIA is to the right of her and
EL MAYA is to the right of ZENIA. (Click photo for big pic)

15/Nov/04 : EL MAYA has been lifted on to
a floating crane. You can see her superstructure is all burnt. The
red craft is an antipollution skimmer AKTAIA 12 from Environmental
Protection Engineering. The yellow dive boat is from Technodive
and is called KERMIT. You can see to the right of the dive boat
the bow of ZENIA in the water. (Click photo for big pic)

16/Nov/04 : ZENIA has also been recovered
and joins EL MAYA on the floating crane
m/y Octopus. It's a
125m monster superyacht owned by Paul Allen of Microsoft.
Seen at marinas worldwide making other major yachts
look bad.
With a cost of $200m
and with 2 helicopters, a submarine, 2 or more tenders,
cinema, recording studio. Octopus has little competition.
